Best Reads of 2009

What constitutes "the best"? Brooding over this question surfaced as SLJ released their Best Books 2009. Criteria of "the best", in my opinion, challenges my current philosophical beliefs about teaching and learning. The texts cause me to reflect, ponder, and grapple at what are ideal teaching practices and methods for engaging students in intellectual rigour. As an addendum, I am adding my favourite professional resources of 2009:
-Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out: Kids Living and Learning with New Media
-Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs
-Powerful Learning: What We Know About Teaching for Understanding
-Comprehension & Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action
